3 Must Make Drinks Using the Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker

When we remodeled our basement a few years ago, we added a Tiki Bar. It’s our own version of our favorite place, Margaritaville Key West. We rushed out and bought our own Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker. Well, let’s say, after much research to find the best margarita machine, we then rushed out… and bought The Navigator. Before we dive into those amazing drink recipes… let’s explore your options when it comes to buying a drink maker.

There are affiliate links in this post. This means we may earn a small commission – at no charge to you – if you choose to click and buy. Thanks, in advance, for your support.

Drink Maker Options

Kitchen Blender

First off, you have your ordinary kitchen blender. If this is all you have… then go for it. But, most blenders won’t create the restaurant-quality drink you are looking for. I can’t seem to figure out how not to have chunks of ice in my drinks. If you are going the blender route, consider upgrading to a good blender. My two recommendations are the KitchenAid K150 series. It crushes ice and makes great smoothies. (click here to see the amazing choices) or a Vitamix (click here to shop).

Ninja Blender

These are, in my opinion, a step up from the kitchen blender. The Ninja Blenders (click here to shop) offer power and are more reasonably priced. The best option is the Ninja Bullet because it crushes ice and makes a nice single serve option, instead of making a full pitcher of margaritas.

Margaritaville Machines

Now, the best option is the Margaritaville Machines. The drinks have the best texture and come so so close to restaurant-quality drinks. Be prepared to impress, not only yourself, but all of your friends.

There are several options, but the basics of the machine are the same. With a touch of a button, the machine automatically crushes the right proportion of ice for your drink. The machines have automatic settings, which make it very easy to make the perfect margarita. Or, you can use the manual controls to customize the drink your way.

The Margaritaville Bahamas Frozen Concoction Maker is the least expensive. It’s a great model to start with or use on the road. It’s very similar to the one I bought and I have been very happy with ours. It can make a 36-ounce pitcher of margaritas and looks great on the bar.

The Margaritaville Bali Frozen Concoction Maker dispenses directly into your glass. Not sure, for the price, this is a needed upgrade.

Hosting large parties?? Then the Margaritaville Tahiti Frozen Concoction Maker is a must!

My Favorite Recipes

Margarita

Fill the ice reservoir. In the base container add:

Turn on the machine and push the start/shave button. The machine will do the rest.

Strawberry Daiquiri

I am not a fan of a sweet daiquiri. This recipe has the darker notes from the dark rum. If you prefer, double the amount of light rum and skip the dark, this will give the drink a lighter sweeter note.

Fill the ice reservoir. In the base container add:

Turn on the machine and push the start/shave button. The machine will do the rest.

Pina Colada

This is one of my favorite version of Pina Coladas.

Fill the ice reservoir. In the base container add:

Turn on the machine and push the start/shave button. The machine will do the rest.

Tips for Using your Margaritaville Margarita Maker

First, let the ice sit out for about 10 minutes. I fill the ice bucket with ice and then pour the ice into the reservoir. Then I begin to assemble the drink ingredients. This lets the ice melt slightly and helps the machine create the perfect frozen drink texture.

Second, we have the Navigator version, and the perfect amount of liquid that needs to be in the blending jar is 12 ounces. If you want a thicker drink, then add only 11 ounces and hold the shave-n-blend control button longer. If you want a thinner drink, add 13 ounces of liquid. If you adjust any of your drink recipes to be 12 ounces, the machine, if you use the automatic setting, will make the perfect drink each and every time. Check your directions to ensure yours recommends 12 ounces as the amount needed to make a drink.

Third, don’t feel that you need to drink the entire pitcher at one time. I have freezer safe containers at the ready and when I have poured out how much I want, the rest can go into the container and be stored in the freezer until ready to drink. Let the frozen concoction thaw slightly and it will be ready to go.

Fourth, the machine is very easy to clean. I wipe it down after making each drink keeps the machine from becoming “sticky”. After the ice has melted in the reservoir, I drain the holding container in the back and rinse it out. The base washes with soap and water. I use a large bottle brush to keep my hands from touching the blades.

My Favorite Extras for the Tiki Bar

Every home Tiki bar needs to feel like an escape. A place to feel like you are on vacation, even if it’s a Tuesday night. Check out these cool things that make your home feel like paradise (Click here)

I think most people agree that rims need to be salted. Here’s a great salt rimer to check out.

Of course, everyone needs a set of margarita glasses to enjoy these drinks. Check these out!

Curaçao: Blue Lagoon

Up next on our list is a cocktail from the Netherland Antilles, originating on the charming island of Curacao , where, quite famously, "Everything is Dushi." The word Dushi originates from the local Papiamento language spoken on Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire (otherwise known as the ABC Islands), and it translates into: Everything is sweet, delicious, lovely, so very fine. And you won't have any difficultly believing that life is sweet when you arrive on the turquoise blue shores of Curacao—though, depending on your sweet-tooth, you might not have the same reaction to the turquoise blue liqueur for which the island is famous. We say: Don't knock it until you try it. And the Blue Lagoon is quite refreshing with its mixture of lemonade, vodka, and that famously fluorescent drink. Go ahead and take a chance on a new flavor—you might be surprised by how much you like it. Cheers, Dushi!

  • 1 oz Vodka
  • 1 oz Blue curaçao
  • 4 oz Lemonade
  • Orange wheel
  • Lemon wheel (Optional)
  • Maraschino cherry

Add all the ingredients save for the fruit (vodka, Blue Curacao, and lemonade) into a shaker, add ice and shake. Afterward, strain the liquid into a hurricane glass over crushed ice for your drinking pleasure. Finally, garnish with an orange wheel or a lemon wheel and a Maraschino cherry (on top of your well-earned treat.) Cheers!

Frozen Banana Split Cocktail

If you can't imagine a banana split without the ice cream, this recipe is for you. It's essentially a spiked milkshake that plays off the banana split's most popular toppings. With its chocolate and strawberry vodka foundation, fresh banana, and pineapple juice, it's utterly delicious.

How to Make the Syrup

There are a few ways to make syrups, but they essentially boil down to two methods: hot or cold. As you’ve probably already guessed, hot methods apply heat to create the syrup, on the stovetop or via sous vide. Cold methods can include blending or creating an oleo saccharum, which essentially macerates fruit with sugar, pulling the water from the fruit to create a syrup.

Most fruits benefit from using a cold method, although the oleo saccharum method can require more time. If your shrub doesn’t include any ingredients such as cinnamon that require heat to release flavor in nonalcoholic solutions, cold methods are the way to go. Strawberries, for example, don’t fare well when heat is added they turn bitter and lose the essence of their flavor. Macerating strawberries with sugar to create a syrup will yield a more vibrant fruit flavor.

“I let the fruit dictate which method I use,” says Ellenwood. “Do I want bright fruit notes or jammy caramelized notes? With delicate fruits, berries and herbs, I’ll go with a cold method. Heartier fruits or deeper spices? Hot method all the way. Pressed for time? Hot method.”

Recipe: The Jungle Bird Cocktail

The term “tiki drink” conjures images of a cocktail suitable only for an island oasis or for sipping while sinking your toes in the sand. With the Jungle Bird, no frilly accessories are necessary, and even the sunshine is optional. This throwback cocktail has layers of dark rum, Campari, pineapple and lime juice — it works in a weirdly wonderful way. Just grab a glass and some ice and you’re halfway there.

I had my first Jungle Bird at Nomad in New York City. Until a year ago, I had never even seen this drink on cocktail menus now it seems this bird is popping up everywhere. Jeff “The Beach Bum” Berry can be thanked for bringing this fruity and bitter sip to the masses. Jeff is the king of all things tiki. He has published six books on vintage tiki drinks and was the first to publish this recipe.

I love the Jungle Bird because it’s a taste of tiki without the fuss. Put out some bar nuts and mix yourself a bird for a tiki- inspired happy hour in no time.
