Taco Bell came out with spicy fried chicken “chips” with volcanic dipping sauce

Will triangular bits of fried chicken catch on?

Taco Bell is expanding its palette by adding Volcano Crispy Chicken Chips (aka spicy, triangular-shaped chicken nuggets) to menus near its headquarters in Irvine, California, though the nuggets have also been spotted in Knoxville, Tennessee. The slightly spicy fried chicken triangles made with marinated white meat chicken come with a side of lava sauce.

This isn’t Taco Bell’s first foray into the territory of McDonald’s and Burger King. The company is also currently testing out loaded French fries in select locations for the first time.

This is all a part of the Mexican fast-food brand’s New Year’s commitments, which include getting rid of extra-large soda sizes, becoming more ingredient-conscious (no more antibiotics, and cutting back on sodium), introducing new menu items, becoming more environmentally savvy, and giving scholarships to its employees.

You can get the Volcano Crispy Chicken Chips for a mere $1 for a pack of six. With fully loaded fries, that comes to only $2.

[UPDATED] Taco Bell's Announced A New Quesadilla AND The Return Of Your Fave Menu Item

In case you missed it, Taco Bell turned fried chicken into tortilla chips this summer and it was amazing. The Naked Chicken Chips were only around for a short time, and we hoped it wouldn't be too long before they came back in some form or another. Wish, granted.

Starting today, you can get Naked Chicken Chips on their own or inside a cheese quesadilla. That's right, a chicken-nugget-stuffed quesadilla can be yours, and it only costs $3.49. You can also get it in a $5 box along with a Doritos Locos Taco, Crunchy Taco, and medium drink.

Like the last time they were offered, a six-pack of the Chicken Chips will be sold for $1.99 too, and it comes with a side of nacho cheese dipping sauce.

Taco Bell is testing more Chicken Chips-filled menu items in two lucky cities. For a limited time, Indianapolis Taco Bells are serving Chicken & Biscuits, fluffy biscuits with Chicken Chips inside, served with nacho cheese sauce or spicy jalapeño honey.

In Nashville, T. Bell is serving up Bacon Ranch Naked Chicken Chalupas, which are just like the previously-launched Naked Chicken Chalupas, with the addition of bacon and spicy ranch.

All of the items are available now through mid-November, so if you want to try them out, we suggest you get moving.

Whether they intend to or not, Taco Bell's been toying with people's emotions. First, it introduced the planet to the Naked Chicken Chalupa, a taco with a shell made out of boneless fried chicken instead of fried tortilla. Then, roughly a month later, it was gone. The Bell giveth, and the Bell taketh away.

Well, as of May 11, the taco chain's giving low-carb fanatics and keto dieters a whole new way to hit up the drive thru while questionably sticking to their meal plans: Naked Chicken Chips!

That's right, the company's selling crispy, white meat chicken bits with a side of queso for dipping. You might think they're like chicken nuggets with a side of cheese (sure beats honey mustard!), and you wouldn't be totally wrong. They are, but they're also thinly sliced and triangularly shaped, so their texture is somewhere between chicken tender and crunchy tortilla chip, it would seem.

You'll be able to order them as a 6-piece for $1.99, or a 12-piece pack for $2.99. Or, if you're truly hangry, you can get them in a $5 Box with a Burrito Supreme, crunchy taco and medium drink.

Just like the mystical Naked Chicken Chalupa, these mother cluckers will only be available for a limited time, so once they hit your area, you may want to hit up the drive thru, ASAP.

And if not, there's always grabbing an order of popcorn chicken and a side of queso from one of those KFC/Taco Bell mash-up stores. It won't be exactly the same, but we have a feeling you won't hate it, either.
