The puff pastry must be completely thawed when you use it. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and peel the cherries.

Put the cleaned cherries together with the sugar, butter and lemon peel in a bowl over high heat. Bring to a boil until the sugar has melted and mix. Leave the bowl on the fire for a few more minutes, until the sugar syrup coagulates a little.

Finely chop the walnuts or hazelnuts and place them over the cherries. Spread the puff pastry on a tray lined with baking paper. Pour the filling on top, leaving the edges free. Sprinkle a few tablespoons of breadcrumbs on top. Its role is to absorb excess fluid and bind the composition.

Roll the strudel until it is folded twice. Gently press the edges to seal them.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until nicely browned. Allow to cool, then add powdered sugar.

Because I wanted to show you a quick version of these apple strudels, I chose to use fresh pie sheets, bought commercially. They are very good, they contain only flour, water and salt and you can use them in all kinds of dishes, both sweet and salty. Because I really like the combination, I also used cinnamon from Cosmin. Apples and cinnamon fit perfectly and in combination with walnuts are even tastier. I made the strudels from three layers of pie sheets greased with a little oil. I rolled them well and at the end I greased them again with oil to brown them nicely on top.
